The Green River City Council met for its second monthly meeting on Tuesday night , and once again the meeting began with several proclamations. Mayor Hank Castillon pronounced October Breast Cancer Awareness and Cowboys Against Cancer month. Both organizations had local representatives on hand for the meeting to give presentations on what they’d accomplished this year.

URA Main Street Administrator John Dahlgren gave the city council an update on the progress of the Way-Finding Signage Committee. The committee is working on identifying locations for new signs to be placed around the City of Green River to direct traffic to city attractions and local business. The Committee has also purchased several billboards along I-80 to bring traffic off the interstate into Green River.

The Main Street Farmers market turned in its financial synopsis for 2011 and for the first time since it’s creation it posted a profit. Although it was a meager one, the Council was still happy to hear the news. Main Street Administrator John Dahlgren talked about how far the market has come.  In place of cash sponsorship, several local businesses bought cheese from the bee-hive cheese company and donated it to be sold by the farmers market. The Cheese sales brought in an additional 1,800 dollars, bringing the total profit to just over 2,700 dollars. Dahlgren thanked all of the Market sponsors for making the profit possible and the citizens who came to the market to purchase goods.

Cowboy’s Against Cancer had big news for Sweetwater county as well. General Electric has donated $20,000 to the non-profit group and has chosen Cowboy’s Against Cancer to be their starting point for a project starting in February. Wyoming currently ranks 48th out of 50 states in women receiving mammograms. GE will provide a mobile unit including a “Mammography Van” to work in the rural areas of Wyoming with the goal of taking Wyoming from 48th , to 1st in just a years time.
